Could someone please tell me about the lifestyles of living in Romania and/or Ukraine

Could someone please tell me about the lifestyles of living in Romania and/or Ukraine?
We will be having several girls coming from Romania/Ukraine and I have read facts about their countries (population, government, etc.) But I would like to know more about what it is like to live there (music, movies, things to do, what they have that we don't and vice versa). I think it will help me relate to them when they come to know more about where they are coming from.

It will depend highly on where specifically in those countries they're from (big cities vs. small towns vs. rural farmland), not to mention the personal tastes of each individual, of course. If they're from a relatively large city (Bucuresti for Romania, or Kyyiv for Ukraine, for example), they're used to many of the same kinds of lifestyles and amenities you'd find in many large cities... large European cities, anyway. They listen to a lot of the same music you can find in the U.S., at least in terms of popular music, as well as popular music in their own languages from their own countries, too. I'm not sure what you mean by "what they have what we don't", exactly; do you mean food, or what? Sure, you're not going to find the same regional foods in the US/UK (I'm assuming you're from one of those two countries) as they have in Romania or Ukraine... they're not too big on fast food in those countries, though--they tend to prefer more simple, traditional foods, like soups and breads and vegetables and meat. Are they coming as part of some sort of exchange program, or as au pair?... I have friends from both countries, and know a little about both (probably more about Romania), so knowing specifically what you'd like to know and what you'd like to do for your new friends would help.

I will speak to the cultural things my wife and I discuss all the time (she is Ukrainian, and I've lived in Romania too). Popular music there is 1980's US pop style music, whether it is US or native singers. The films are largely American films with native language dubbed over it, and a lot of Russian films in Ukraine. Teens tend to go to internet cafes, malls (in larger cities), and they go to a lot of clubs in the evenings - dances are very popular (they call them "discos"). McDonalds and Coca Cola are common there, but popularity depends on the individual. You will find that the girls tend to dress "sexy", and think Americans and Britons do not "dress to look female". They are very in touch with their sexuality (and are often very sexually active). You will find that they prefer their own food, as it is natural and much more flavorful - both countries are very fertile growing areas in Eastern Europe. Our foods tend to taste bland in comparison. They will not be used to going everywhere in a car, as public transportation is more common there. They usually follow the rule of "I eat when I am hungry" rather than our "3 meals a day" rules. They are used to small apartments/houses, as opposed to American "large homes". Teen girls there like the same things girls here do - clothes, shoes, spending time with friends, talking... The best advice I can give you about relating to them is "listen, and have an open mind". Do not judge anything they do until you talk about the differences.
