Is Romania considered a 'rich' country by way of GDP? If you live in Romania, do you like it? Do many people in Romania know English?

no, no, no. Romania is not at all considered to be a rich country and only few people speak english there comparing to other european countries

It's not rich but not poor either. If you live in Transylvania or in Northern Moldova you will like it. People from the younger generations know English. I make a decent salary and I live in Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture in 2007 and possibly the most beautiful city in Romania.

You can call Romania a "developing country" :D YES for the third question - almost everybody in Romania knows how important it is to learn a foreign language like English (even though they might not spell it perfectly). It's hard to find a young person in Romania that doesn't speak English fluently enough to have a decent conversation - they generally picked it up from watching Cartoon Network at a very young age. Nowadays, they are teaching English in kindergarden... I know many Americans think Romanians can barely say a sentence in English - that's just a prejudice and movies like "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" tend to be insulting with their remarks and all...

by GDP it is leaning towards poor but if you go to Bucharest or some other cities you will see nothing but Audis and Mercedes on the streets and about 1/3 of the people speak at least enough english to get around, half the country is bilingual. I have only been a couple times but when I was I liked it :).

I'm from the U.S. (San Diego, Ca) and I'm here living in Romania with my husband to be. He speaks perfect english and most of his family speak it very good. His 20 year old daughter also speaks english very good. I love Romania and the people are just wonderful, especially after they get to know you a little. As far as I can see, there not rich in money but most seem to have a nice life. When I go shopping most of the people can speak some english and a few seem to speak it very good. Not sure if your looking for a vacation here in Romania but if you are the Romanian cultural is fun and there food and wine are the best. The landscapes are just breathtaking and very interesting.
