Not at all. Romania is a great place to live and not expensive. I live in the us but my mom was born there and I have family over there. The cost of living there is much less than other European Nations. One webistie says about 13,000 a year but it depends on where you live. heres a site for more data!!! http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Romania&displayCurrency=USD

Living in Romania is much cheaper than in other Western European Countries. You can find very beautiful landscapes and the people are friendly. The downside of living in Romania is the poor infrastructure (roads, railroads), inefficient bureaucracy and corruption. Housing is quite cheap at the moment, the worst time to sell a house and the best to buy one. The food: 1 liter of milk costs 1 US Dollar 1 liter of sunflower oil: 2 $ 2 pounds of mushrooms: 2.50 $ 4 pounds of pickles: 3 $ 1 pound of pasta: 2.30 $ 2 pounds of beans: 1.50 $ 2 pounds of rice: 1 $ 2 pounds of sugar: 1 $ 1 can of tuna fish in olive oil: 4 $ 2 pounds of ham: 8 $ 2 pounds of sausages: 3.50 $ 1 pound of frozen vegetables: 4 $ 1 pound of fish fingers: 2.50 $ 2 pounds of carrots: 0.50 $ 1 pound of pizza: about 3 $ 2 pounds of grapefruit: 1 $ Most food you can find on the farmer's market is organic. Also, meat from the local butcher shops is also mostly without additives. Gas, electricity, water, cable, internet are all at reasonable prices: I pay about 20 $ a month for electricity, 20 $ for cable and internet together. I live in a 3 room apartment, so if yu want to buy a house - heating may be more expensive there during winter.

Considerably cheaper than in the US. People make less money there, see, so in relation things are cheaper. If you bought a house, you could live fairly comfortably off about 8 grand a year, since that is the average annual pay there. Depending on how you want to retire, you might want more. Food is a bit cheaper than in America, but since American food is already really cheap... yeah. The difference would be more noticeable if you were Australian. It also might be a good idea to read up on the country if you plan on retiring there. Housing is ridiculously cheap. You can buy a house in a rural area for about 50k USD. Obviously it won't be the nicest house, and that wont buy you much of a house in larger populated areas, but if you want to live on the cheap... nicer buildings and houses can start to get more expensive >100k and so on.
